Home Appliances Essentials Moving in

What home appliances you should have or buy first when moving in to a new home? We listed some essentials, but also some appliances that are there just to add some “home sweet home” sense.

appliances

Moving in into an empty home

If you are moving to your new home or simply renovating, and reinventing your present home, there are some essential appliances that you’ll need. Home appliances are created and designed to make our lives easier and more convenient. Some appliances are essential, some are not essential but nice to have, some have minimal role in your life but you feel good having them for some special occasions, and some just look nice and make your home a joy to see and spend time in.

We have listed 5 essential appliances (and a few non-essential) that you should have or consider buying when moving in.

Absolute Essentials

OK, so these are home appliances that you must/should have before you move in…

  1. Fridge – Unless your plan is eating outside, or eating canned food, or maybe even buying and eating fresh food...then you must have a fridge (ideally combined fridge with a freezer). It’s usually an expensive purchase (although, if you are on a tight budget, you can buy one for under $500), but it’s one that you will have to do eventually, and considering the fact that you need it from the start, make sure to put the fridge at the top you your home appliances list.
  2. Microwave or a Stove/oven – This one is definitely on your budget. Of course buying a stove is the ideal solution, it should be priority over microwave… But of course the price difference between these two is a significant one! On the other side, microwave will do almost all that your stove/oven does. If you opt-in for microwave, you can consider different models, with different setting, features, different size…and as always, balance between the price and what you need.
  3. Coffee machine or Electric kettle – OK, so this might not sound like “essential” appliance, but… If you are a coffee person, or a morning tea person, or just understand that it’s a US thing to have a coffee/tea maker of any kind, you know that you must have one at the top of the list. And, on the good side, this isn’t even a big investment. For more than acceptable price you can buy great quality electric kettle, or for a bit more money added a good coffee machine…
  4. Washing machine – Yes, you can wash everything manually, but do you really want to? It takes a lot of time, a lot of effort, and unless you give 100% effort the results are questionable. So, washing machine is a must! Again, it’s a big purchase, washing machine can cost some decent money, but if again if you are on a tight budget, maybe even buy a used one. Of course, if money isn’t an issue, you should buy it combined with a dryer machine ;) .
  5. Iron – Probably something you wouldn’t think would be a part of this list. Probably wouldn’t even remember it when making the list, and again but… Ironing is an essential part of maintaining your clothes looking clean, and it helps you maintaining personal presentation. And it’s an acceptable investment regardless your budget. You can buy a very good iron under $50.

 kitchen

Not essential, but you wanna have these appliances

Let’s list a few home appliances that you don’t need when moving in, but you want to have them (if possible).

Dishwasher – yes, not necessary, but somehow it becomes one of the essentials… Washing dishes manually is something that is time consuming (and boring), and dishwasher is a solution. It can be a bit expensive purchase, but if possible it should be up there in your list.

Vacuum cleaner – oh, this one should be a purchase you want to invest to. Vacuum cleaner can be standard, cordless, robot vacuum…and depending on the technology, the price can go way over $1000, but it’s an investment you should consider giving some more budget space.

Toaster and Blender – These 2 kitchen appliances are usually kitchen décor, besides being convenient and very useful appliances. So, not essential appliances, but the ones you want to have to make your kitchen feels more as home.

TV – Any comment needed for TV? Yeah, we don’t think so as well.

Arabica vs. Robusta, Which One is Perfect for You?

There are 2 essential ingredients for a perfect espresso coffee: coffee beans and espresso machine. If you fail with either of these two, no matter how good is the other one, you won’t get a perfect espresso coffee, or even a good one…

espresso coffee

Espresso machine

One of the two key ingredients is an espresso machine. Here we will be talking only about the smaller, home versions of espresso machines. Professional machines for coffeehouses restaurants and coffee bars are a different price range and in good way a different coffee machines than the home versions. Some of the better known brand names espresso machines (DeLonghi, Dafino, Krups, Breville, Flair…) can come up to $1000!

So buying an espresso machine can definitely be an investment that should take some time to decide. All big brands come with high quality and similar specs, and usually it only comes down to what do you prefer. We find that for home use it is best to get fully automatic espresso machine…although semi-automatic or manual machines might seem more appealing or make you feel more barista-like, the truth is that after a few days you will just want your espresso coffee tasting perfectly and prepared effortlessly.

 coffee

Arabica vs. Robusta

Coffee beans are the seeds of berries from flowering plants in the Coffea genus. The seeds are separated from the coffee plant to get a raw product - unroasted green coffee. To produce the coffee that we know, the seeds are then roasted, and grinded into fine particles.

Arabica coffee (also known as Arabian coffee), comes from the Arabica plant. It is the most popular coffee in the world as it makes up around 60% of global coffee production. Arabica originates from Ethiopia and is grown worldwide in countries (like Brazil and Indonesia), which have tropical conditions and high elevations which is necessary for Arabica coffee plants. It has many varieties but the two most popular ones are Typica and Bourbon. Arabica beans have rich, sweet-aroma, low sour taste, that makes it the most popular coffee choice. Arabica also has lower to mid % of caffeine in itself, so it popular choice for people that preferring drinking more than 1-2 coffees per day. Of course the most quality coffee you can drink is 100% Arabica, but that’s rarely the case as it is often mixed in a blend with Robusta which give the final product a rich, strong taste and creamy texture.

arabica vs robusta

Robusta Coffee comes from the Coffea Canephora plant. It is the second most popular coffee in the world, behind Arabica coffee. Up to 40% of global coffee production goes on Robusta coffee. It originates from sub-Saharan Africa, and nowadays it mostly grown in the east (Africa, Vietnam (the leader in Robusta coffee production), Indonesia). As well as Arabica, Robusta comes if many varieties, but the 2 most popular Robusta coffees are Erecta and Nganda. Robusta coffee has more caffeine % in it than Arabica, which probably influenced its recent growth in popularity (as mentioned, 40% of coffee market goes to Robusta coffee, but before it was more around 20%). It has earthy, nutty, some say rubbery taste, and definitely more bitter than sour taste. Robusta is often used for espresso coffee making. High end Robusta is especially desirable selection. Whether it’s 100% Robusta or more often a blend, it’s thick, creamy quality gives an espresso coffee additional fullness.

Although Arabica coffee is often considered to be a higher quality, and Robusta as being lower quality coffee, it's not always the case. Mostly that is because Arabica is consistently “good” while top quality Robusta coffee will usually taste as good as or even better than average Arabica. At the end, it comes to what you like more, which taste do you prefer more…and the prefect choice would probably be a fine blend of two, that you can find at the local coffeehouse ;) .

How to Use an Espresso Machine

Many of us start our day with a cup of coffee, which gives us the energy we need to get through the day. For some, the mere aroma of brewing coffee is sufficient to feel comfortable. Having said that, coffee making itself is an art, and good coffee can be brewed only with the right Espresso machine. Coffee makers are unquestionably the most crucial piece of a café's equipment list or the coffee lover's kitchen, considering the well-known love for espresso. In addition to facilitating the procedure, a decent machine aids in the preparation and enjoyment of many coffee varieties.

Now, if you are looking for some coffee maker options, but are confused about how to use the espresso machine, here’s a guide to making coffee using the machine.

How to Prepare Coffee Using a Coffee Machine?

Here are the steps you must follow while preparing coffee from an espresso machine

  • The first step is to preheat the machine. You must ensure that the entire espresso maker is preheated to achieve maximum performance. Some coffee machines' processing times can reach as high as 25 minutes, so turn yours up early to ensure you get the best coffee out of it.
  • Now, you have to measure the required quantity of beans and grind them. Then, add about 20 grams of ground coffee to your portafilter after setting your scale, and then remove the scale. To ensure consistency during the dialing-in period, make sure to keep an eye on the quantity of coffee beans you use. We recommend you keep the quantity within the recommended range of the coffee maker.
  • Next, make sure to grind them to a very fine powder but not too fine. The consistency should be similar to that of granulated sugar. For one espresso shot, grind one ounce of coffee beans. Some coffee makers must have a built-in function for grinding the beans. If so, you can use that instead of a grinder.
  • Distribute the ground beans evenly and start tamping. To tamp properly, press the powder firmly down considering you do not want an uneven puck.
  • Next, pull the first shot. Technically, it will take around 20 to 30 seconds to pull one shot. If your machine has a pressure gauge, keep an eye on that to check the pressure. Some machines even have a digital indication to show how well extracted your espresso shots are. You can even adjust the extract level by tasting the coffee.
  • Now, start steaming the milk, especially if you wish to prepare a latte, cortado, etc. You can use your machine’s steam wand for the same. Mix the milk with the powder well, and your coffee is ready.
