Front Load vs. Top Load
Front, or horizontal, loading washer is the most design in Europe. It is also used for (almost) all industrial and commercial washing machines. In this design clothes are loaded at the front side of the washer, to a vertically mounted (perforated) washing drum, which is contained in a water-retaining tub. Washer opening is closed with a hinged, circular, waterproof door. Washing drum is turned around the horizontal axis. The principle on which front load washer is washing clothes is by tumbling it.
Top, or vertical, loading washer, is the dominant design in North America. It is designed in such way that it places the clothes in a vertically mounted (perforated) washing drum, which is contained within a water-retaining tub. Clothes are loaded in the washing drum through the top of the machine, which is usually covered with a hinged door. Washing drum is turned around the vertical axis. The principle on which front load washer is washing clothes is by agitation.
In general, simple verdict is that front loader washing machines are better than top loaders. It’s not a clear cut case, but in major categories, front loading washers get all the points… They are better at washing/clothes cleaning, load capacity, water usage, and spin speed. On the other hand, top load washing machines are less expensive, smaller in size, and less susceptible to mold.
